Live Long & Healthy - Simple steps

Sorry, I have been out of the loop - there is a reason why you haven't had any news from me lately!!!

For the last 2 weeks or so I have been having a ball. Not only have we been enjoying our lovely puppy Peaches, but I have also been celebrating my 60th birthday. I have loved every minute of enjoying meeting up with friends, talking on the phone with those whom I couldn’t meet in person due to logistics.
With the celebrating, I have been eating and drinking a lot more in volume and a lot of new things – including espresso Martinis – They went down a treat!!

Although I have had a blast reaching this significant age – I think it is quite an achievement as I really did abuse my body when I was younger – think espresso martinis on steroids that was my life every day for years! Until I got stopped in my tracks when one day I just couldn't get out of bed, which led me down this road of natural health and well being.

Whenever I have reached a milestone I have made it a habit of sitting down and writing about what I want the rest of my life to look like moving forward. this time the thoughts were about the next 40 plus years ( thinking really positively) and what would I like them to look like.
My answer was and I am sure many of you would agree with quite a few of them!!

Moving forward I will be

  • Pain-free

  • Have lots of energy

  • Keep fit and agile

  • Look and feel as young as possible – feel being the most important

  • My brain to be firing on all cylinders

  • To travel often

  • To enjoy each and every day to the max – to enjoy new experiences and to keep on trialing new exciting things.

  • Have great relationships with family and friends

  • To help as many others as possible to age gracefully too – this one is a big reason why I want all of the above!! It is my priority

So how can I do that?
Well, with all the research that I have done over the years I have found that if you do the small basic things consistently then you will yield the rewards. So longevity to me is all about the basics and they are: if you have been reading this newsletter for a few months or more you will know quite a few of these!!

  • Minerals – the foundations of good health, especially Magnesium – you knew that would be coming didn’t you?

  • Water – good quality water is vital for our ongoing health, We have a new exciting product available at Vitality – Kangen water – If you haven’t heard about this water yet then have a look at this short video it will explain a little bit of what it is about and why you just have to try it (our machine will be arriving any day now) I am so excited as I have read, watched, talked to people and done a huge volume of research about it and I know it will enhance everyone’s life. One thing that springs to mind is that it is an antioxidant!! Yep, this water is an antioxidant!!

  • Good quality food – think fast track to health all the foods are low inflammatory

  • Intermittent fasting – see this blog for more info on this

  • Laugh every day and surround yourself with people who you enjoy being with. People that help you grow and evolve

  • Keep learning and put those learnings into practice

  • Ground yourself and find a way to still the mind – meditation, walking, swimming – whatever makes you feel good after it

There are of course more but we are talking simplicity and simplicity has to be the key to optimum sustainable health!!

I also have some amazing news – just found out that Kiwi Norma Cowie – Author, Tarot card reader who has also been featured on TV and Radio in her adopted country Canada – is coming to our shop and is offering readings on Thursday 28th February.

I am not sure of all the details yet, but if you are interested then please get in touch – here is Norma’s Website to find out more about her https://www.normacowie.com/

I am so excited to meet this amazing lady and I hope you are too!!

We have a new member of our Team, Peaches; the French Bulldog. She is a divine puppy who came to us through a set of divine circumstances and we are so blessed. Peaches has been with us for about 10 days and already made a huge difference to our lives. Plus she has had an input in the business too!

Last Thursday I emailed a local supplier of raw, wild pet food for Peaches, Possumman of Whangarei. On Friday they emailed me back and said that they just happened to be coming up that day and that they would pop in. To cut a long story short, we have ended up having a freezer full of well balanced, ethically caught PLUS chemical, poison and metal checked food. All ready and waiting for pet lovers in the area. The prices are very reasonable, plus, Peaches absolutely loves it, I am sure your pet will too – suitable for cats as well as dogs!!

If you pop in Peaches (and I) would love to see you

With Love

“When everything changes, change everything”

I don’t know if you have heard the phrase “when everything changes, change everything”?

It is the title of a book by Neale Donald Walsh and is definitely worth reading as it is full of tips and antidotes as to how to make those changes!

Over the last 8-10 years Fast Track to Health has been slowly changing, evolving as we learn, learn about new research but the main way we learn is through YOU!

So, are we about to change Everything? In a way yes, but fundamentally, no!!

As you may have seen last week, we put a call out for volunteers to test some new additions to the program. And voila we have had many who have asked to join our trial. This trial is the start of the change, something bigger much bigger than just us!. When I put out the call, it was with the intention to just ask 5 willing to accept a challenge and to play along with us.

Intermittent fasting – simply the best way to keep healthy!

First what is intermittent Fasting?

There are so many ways to do this, some people fast for a few hours or a few days – but research is showing that we are better off eating within an 8-10-hour period. What this means is that you simply skip a meal.

What I have found over the last 10 years of doing this is that Breakfast for most, is the easiest meal to skip. Making sure you have lots of fluids to keep you hydrated. In no time at all you get used to this way of being and you don’t feel hungry. With Fast Track to Health we recommend eating between 11am and 8 pm which is a 9 hour window, but many clients find that they are simply not hungry at 11 and so don’t eat until 1 or 2 pm which makes their window of eating 7-8 hours.  But the best thing is that the health benefits are huge.

First though let’s go to why the 3 meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, isn’t serving us health wise.
Research has shown that when you eat throughout the day your body adapts to using sugar as energy. This in turn switches off the enzymes that utilise and burn stored body fat. In effect turning your body into stress mode as it is under constant bombardment. Research suggests that 90% of people eat within a time frame of 12- 15 hours. This has been shown to be metabolic disaster and can lead to all sorts of health issues. This most often leads to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Plus of course you will gain weight! As we look through recent health history as the western world no longer is struggling to find food, we have been strongly encouraged to have the three meals a day – through advertising and then through medical advice. The incidence of obesity, diabetes and other metabolic disorders have been on a steep trajectory, in the wrong direction.

What can intermittent fasting help with?

It can normalise your hunger levels to real hunger for food, instead of craving for carbs and sugar foods.
Increases HGH – human growth hormone – which is vital for keeping us young, fit and healthy. It also helps us to grow healthy muscle tissue whilst letting go of unwanted body fat. Supresses inflammation and therefore pain. Normalises blood sugar levels and helps us become more insulin sensitive, which is a really good thing as this can help reduce or completely bring Diabetes under control. Promotes leptin uptake – Leptin is a hormone created in our fat cells, the fat cells release it when they are full. In turn Leptin, gets  which is a mechanism that if all is working well . Improve immune function, helps to lower blood pressure , reduces risk of heart disease , reduces risk of cancer and boosts fat burning.

These benefits however will only come about if you are in Ketosis – burning fat rather than sugars as energy.

How do you do that?

Well you come off all sugars and carbohydrates for 6 weeks (Think Fast Track To Health phase 1) Then you slowly find out how your body tolerates some sugars – keeping on intermittent fasting most of the time and once your body is stable and feeling good – normally after 3-6 months you can have 1-2 days a week (although preferably not together) were you can eat what you like.

This way of being is not about calorie restriction, so make sure you are eating enough to keep you energised and your brain sharp and active. If you don’t feel this then you may need to tweak your nutrition and levels of fats.

Testimonial Bridget – Auckland

After going onto Fast track 2 Health 3 years ago, I have never gone back to “normal” eating as I feel so good. I find that I don’t have to be super good with my food choices as long as I stick to the eating between 11am and 8pm – in fact I normally eat between 1pm and 8pm and I find that it really suits me. On Fast Track I lost 22kg’s and felt amazing. My doctor took me off the blood pressure pills that I had been on for over 5 years, I haven’t looked back. Over the 2.5 years since doing fast track I have lost another 5 kg’s just by following these simple techniques. I still use the magnesium and take boost every day, I think they really help me too as I did run out for a few months and started to feel aches ands pains. As soon as I got back onto them I felt so much better so that proves to me that they are staple products that I personally need on a regular basis – they are in fact my daily supplements!

Why is adrenal health so important?

A question I am often asked - Why is adrenal health so important?

Over the last few years, after working with thousands of clients, I feel that looking after and healing our adrenal cortex is vital for nearly every symptom/disease process and it is well known that stress is our greatest killer. BUT if we look below the surface then ALL disease is caused by one stress or another.

What has to do the work when we are stressed? Our Adrenals are the ones that are our first line of defense! So they are overworked nearly all the time! This is why I believe that my programs and products are so successful. We always take the adrenals into account when making recommendations. As an example, our Magnesium, no matter which you choose, will be supporting your adrenal hormone production. As I dive into clients history and symptoms, there always appears to be an element of stress that has to be taken into account. An example: about 6 months ago, Chloe came to see me about her food allergies. A year before coming to see us, she had been recommended to heal her gut by changing her diet and to take quite a few supplements. Chloe did this for almost a year, saw slight improvements, but as soon as she ate anything that wasn't on the list of allowed foods her symptoms came back with a vengeance. Those symptoms were skin breakouts plus being doubled up with pain. Once the acute symptoms abated, she was left with constipation and a dull ache in her back and gut area. Chloe popped in to see me at the shop. We had a short discussion and decided to work in a different way. Yes we did the food thing - I put her on Fast Track to Health diet (as it is very low inflammatory, but easier than the program she had been on!). We then went on to work on her adrenals - will explain why in a minute - we made up a homeopathic formula to help with this and then gave her Boost drops to support her liver, kidneys and lymph as she was healing. Plus Calm Magnesium, Zinc drops and some Adaptogenic herbs - like a tonic- the Diet, was only for 40 days, like Fast track To Health.

When Chloe came back to see me, she felt so much better and was not only symptom-free, but she felt clearer and more energised than she could remember. Then for the next 40 or so days we went on to add foods to find out which were good and those that were not so good for her - just like in Fast Track to Health Phase 2. She was delighted to find that she wasn't reacting to hardly any, in fact, she was thriving.

After 3 months Chloe hadn't had one break out or reaction of any sort. We hadn't worked on her gut at all, so how did it work? Well, the reason I will normally treat Adrenals rather than the gut is this: My theory is that when our Adrenals are constantly in stress mode, then they start to overreact to everything including the foods that we eat, the more stress we have the more foods become stressors. So it goes on in a vicious circle of being affected by everything around us. This reaction isn't just giving us gut issues, it can cause aches and pains throughout the whole body - normally at your weakest point(s). Plus can cause weight gain, low energy, depression, anxiety etc.etc.

So Back to Chloe, as I said was feeling so much better after 3 months, now after 6 months of taking a few specific products, she is totally symptom-free and is full of energy and vitality. This is a very quick turnaround as Chloe isn't a young lady (in years anyway) she is post-menopausal and yes she did have hot flushes and anxiety too!

Why am I bringing this up? Well, our New Sensual Balance Programme is up and running and is all about helping to heal our adrenal cortex and also designed to help the rest of our body to feel alive and to thrive, not just surviva!! This is the main reason that this programme came about when talking to a lovely client who wanted help with her libido and energy. So I got to work and researched, found what I needed to focus on and realised that I already had written the program – 5 years ago that was designed to help adrenal health.

I remembered that when you look at our adrenal health you really can see how it relates to all areas of our physical lives, including our sensual way of being. So, I dug up that program, re-jigged it, got the formulas that I had used with Chloe and others that had worked, added in the adaptogenic herbs (which are in effect tonics for the whole body but are there to help us cope with stress and in some cases heal the adrenal cortex) that I have been using for a very long time, researched more foods that can help revitalise and regenerate our hormonal system and voila.

Now we have a new programme – Sensual Balance. This is the perfect way to help heal the adrenal cortex as well as the rest of our body. This program is a perfect follow on from Fast track To Health as it can really help deal with the long-term effects of stress. The Products can be purchased as a pack (recommended) or separately.

Homoeopathic spray - this spray is designed to help your body cope with day to day stress and to help protect you from common stressors, like Electromagnetic field stress, trauma etc. Take this 3 times daily 20 minutes away from food and drink.

Balance Boost drops - ionic minerals with homoeopathic remedies to help support your detoxification processes as well as emotional support - using quantum essences Sensual

Balance Magnesium Gel - this is a wonderful way of getting magnesium into your body plus awakening your senses with the divine smell of pure essential oils. These include:- Jasmine Absolute, Rose Absolute, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli and Vertivert all in a base of magnesium made with neroli hydrosol - orange water

Adaptogenic Herbs - In this formula, the herbs include adaptogens and they are herbs that help heal or give relief to our adrenals as well as other herbs that act as a tonic for the rest of our body, including our nervous system. The herbs included in this formula are:- Astragalus, Turmeric, Red clover, Siberian Ginseng, Ashwagandha, Bacopa and Rosemary. This really is a feel-good blend of herbs that are taken 3 x daily in water - don't take after 7 pm otherwise you could be kept awake!

The Diet to help adrenals and complete health is using real food, with an emphasis on fats, protein and vegetables, 2 portions of fruit and collagen - including gelatine, beef one broth and marine collagen. Lots of good liquids, including herb teas, lemon water, etc.

Why use products and diet? The reason we do both is so that you get the full benefit of doing a program like this. Just taking products can help, however putting foods and products together creates a magical synergy that you will not believe until you do it!

Purchase the full SENSUAL BALANCE PROGRAMME and you will also get the instructions as to what to eat and do when you are working on this process PLUS a FREE consultation with me to go through your specific needs to see if we need to tweak your formulas (normally no extra charge for that)

Give me a call on 021 408 277 if you would like to know more! Have a magnificent day and remember no matter what, YOU ARE PERFECT!

Depression/Anxiety/Fatigue

Are you like a high proportion of the population suffering from either mild or debilitating feelings of anxiousness, depression and/or fatigue?

You could be suffering from ….. Fear! Yes that’s right these emotions/feelings are simply just fear in another guise. If we are in fear then all sorts of things can raise their ugly heads and bite us on the derriere.

Life has changed hugely over the last five decades; things we used to take for granted are no longer written in stone, like jobs for example. When I was growing up people had jobs for life, they stayed in their houses and they had neighbours that did the same. Everything was stable and ticked along at a gentle pace.

When I was growing up people had jobs for life, they stayed in their houses and they had neighbours that did the same. Everything was stable and ticked along at a gentle pace.

Now we have a world that is unstable that even our monetary system is wobbly. No wonder we are living in fear! However we can cope, in fact we have to learn to cope as this it the way the world is and we have a choice we either sink or swim.

I am personally making a choice – I am going to swim and I am going to help as many people who want to swim along with me!

Why do we react like we do?

The reason we are either suffering from anxiety or fatigue or anything in between is due to our hormonal system going into overdrive, our adrenals are working overtime and we are feeling on edge and tired at the same time.

There is an awful lot written about chronic fatigue and I am sure there are some of you reading this are sufferers of this horrible ailment - I know how you feel as I have been there. I have been blessed over the last 30 years to have overcome the chronic fatigue I was struck down with in my 20’s and to help others to do the same. However if I had of taken notice of the anxiety I had when I was in my teens I might never have fallen as hard or as long as I did!

Tips to reduce Anxiety/Fear:

Try one or more of these tips to help you on a daily basis to reduce anxiety

1. Try deep breathing I have found the following technique really useful. You can do this anywhere, well nearly! Take a deep breath in, through your nose for a count of 5, hold it, for a count of 6 then breathe out for a count of 7. Do this once to start with as if you do too many at first you can find yourself getting a bit dizzy.

2. Go for a gentle walk out in the fresh air, whenever you feel anxious. Gentle exercise can be a wonderful therapy for those of us prone to anxiety

3. Some essential oils can really help – so keep some on hand to help almost immediately. Lavender is probably the most known about but patchouli and geranium are a great mix to put with your lavender for an exotic antidote

4. Herbal supplements like Bacopa, ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng and lemon balm can really help. – New product just made!

5. It is recommended to meditate if you are prone to any forms of anxiety however if you are anything like me with a brain that hates to shut off, I find guided visualisations really useful. I have found that the meditations by Jo Dispenza are awesome – Her is a link to one on You tube https://youtu.be/kRUGvP4H8ik

6. Avoid drinking excess alcohol as this really can make things a lot worse.

7. Massage and/or Acupuncture work is very good at combating stress as it can help reduce inflammation.

8. Write a to do list every evening before finishing up for the day and have it beside you so that when an idea comes to you, you can write it down. By doing this you are de cluttering your mind. I have a to do list that includes something for me personally to do every day – see bonuses for the template

9. It has been shown that by being creative can take your mind away from other things so pick something totally different from what you do for work – I see my work as my ART so I make sure that I either pick up a paint brush or a needle and thread to distract me (neither of these are easy for me to do so it takes a huge amount of concentration to do them)

10. When you start to think in a negative way – make it a habit to change that around. Once you get used to doing this you will feel better and then things start getting easier and you will feel less anxious and more in control – as the saying goes “the better it gets, the better it gets” . We always need to practice this one!

11. Get some sunshine. you have to be in sun to get essential vitamins everyone always feels better when the sun starts to shine. If you can’t be in the sun then take a vitamin D supplement

12. Sleep for at least 7 hours each night. If this is a challenge for you then you might need some assistance. Try chamomile tea or an Epsom salts bath – just 12 minutes and don’t have it too hot, why only 12 minutes? The theory is that Epsom salts help us to detox and if you stay in the bath any longer reverse osmosis starts, which means you start to re=absorb the toxins you have released.

13. Take a magnesium supplement – in my opinion transdermal is best as by applying it to the skin bypasses what can sometimes be a digestion that is under duress. – our Calm Magnesium is designed to help with these symptoms.

14. Eat lots of vegetables and good quality protein – organic where possible.

Gut health – Why has it become such BIG NEWS?

Over the last few years, probiotics, gut biome testing, fermented foods have all become mainstream news. You will see advert after advert on TV, Facebook, magazines etc. about our gut health and how this or that product will change everything for us.

Why, and are all these products really that good?

In our intestines we carry around a huge mixture of microbes that when in balance are helping us in so many ways. Some symptoms of dysbiosis – unbalanced gut flora – are obvious, from bloating, to constipation and diarrhoea and all the digestive symptoms in that area.

Some probiotic facts

We have 100 trillion bacteria in our guts – including between 500 -2,000 different types – most of those are beneficial.

70-90% of your immune system is in your GI tract!

The Human brain weighs approximately 3lbs and the bacteria living in your = 3.5lb
(if you are healthy that is)

More than 40 diseases have been linked to bacterial imbalance including depression, arthritis, IBS and cancer. Gut bacteria create 95% of the bodies serotonin

The other symptoms might not be quite so obvious. Like weakened immune system, skin problems like acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, Allergies, mental fog, depression, weight gain, food cravings, low energy, auto immune dis-eases, diabetes. The list goes on and on.

So you can see why the gut is being taken so seriously. However not all of the products on the market are effective. In fact some of the probiotic strains are showing up to be causing problems that they were designed to help.

So to take the confusion out of what to take and what not to take. I like to make things very simple and this is the reason why.

After working as a practitioner for over 30 years I have seen the rise and rise of the “Natural health foods” industry. So much so that it is now big business. With that comes companies that are simply in this for the money. Unfortunately, as a consumer you get so bombarded with information, I know you just don’t know who to believe! Plus why should you believe me?? Well, I promise you, I am not a big business/corporation. Nor am I being paid by any company to promote. I am just wanting to help as many people as I can live more comfortably in their own skin as possible.

I first came into natural health because I was looking for answers to my health issues that I had at the time. As I found solutions I decided to study that modality. Simple really. I know how much it costs to get healthy if you are wanting real health, not just have symptoms masked by drugs. Over the years my health has been a huge investment for myself and my family.

So my mission is to save you the time and money – making optimum health simple again.

This simple solution applies to gut health just as it applies to everything else.

I have seen the rise of probiotics since I first prescribed them in the early 90’s, I have read the research on nearly every product, tried many if they appealed. But I always come back to one!

Reuteri!

Why Reuteri and what is it?

Reuteri it the most researched of probiotics and that is for a very good reason. It has been discovered that Reuteri is the first probiotic we receive as a new born baby as it is present in colostrum (first milk). It is there as the seeds to help build a healthy biome. It helps proliferate good bacteria and helps destroy the negative bacteria. Helping to establish a healthy digestive tract right from the start of life.

If we aren’t breast fed, we do miss that vital part of the puzzle to great health. However even if our gut has a good start in life there are many things that even Reuteri cannot combat daily. Like excess sugar consumption, alcohol, stressed body, nutritional deficiencies. Plus, it has been found that levels of Reuteri in breast milk have slowly been declining due to unhealthy dietary habits of the mother, grandmother.

Then we come to why it is my preferred probiotic. Simple really, it works!

I have been prescribing Reuteri for the last 14 years to clients and it has given us great results- along with dietary, nutritional additions, and sometimes remedies to help the journey. I believe this probiotic is one of the reasons that everything else I recommend works so well.

The research shows that it can help with gut health – which is obvious really. But can significantly help those with IBS, crohn’s disease , infection protection, boost immunity, metabolic disorders, reduces inflammation, lactose intolerance, helicobacter pylori infection, eczema, hives, psoriasis, is also being researched to be used with cancer treatment.

Reuteri is available in capsule, chewable and powder – the powder is great for young children and the chewable tablets and the capsules are great for everyone else.

Take at night before bed – oh and by the way reuteri is antibiotic resistant and so can and should be taken if you have to take antibiotics.

Just a quick note on fermented foods. Not all fermented foods will be ideal for you. They all contain different bacteria’s and some may suit you and some may not. Just like any food really.

I have found that things like olives and capers are great for me but kombucha and sauerkraut are not things I can have regularly.

Here is some information that I wrote about 4 years ago that might be of interest

Fermented foods vs probiotics

Fermented food has made a comeback in recent years, partially thanks to the popularization of Weston A. Price teachings. Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi aren’t considered to be the most appealing types of food; however, research exploring these and other fermented products on gut, brain, and body health has revitalized public interest.

The fermentation process encourages essential bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium to flourish.

The fermentation process encourages essential bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium to flourish.

Lactobacillus acidophilus – some info

When L. acidophilus is co-cultivated with other organisms, L. acidophilus has repeatedly been shown to inhibit the growth of competing microbes. It is thought that L. acidophilus produces a variety of antimicrobial compounds including organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, diacetyl and bacteriocins. The activity of these compounds is evident in the laboratory, but the in vivo role of these compounds is less clear. This is an area of active research. For instance, human fecal samples show a correlation between a reduction in pH and an increase in short chain fatty acids with higher faecal counts of Lactobacilli and bifidobacterial (which is another species that exhibits a probiotic effect). In the laboratory strain NCFM demonstrated antagonistic activity against common foodborne disease agents such as Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, and enteropathogenic Escherichia col – more on these a bit later

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Bifidobacterium bifidum, known as B. bifidum, is a strain of bacteria commonly used as a probiotic. Probiotics are living microorganisms that simulate the beneficial bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans. B. bifidum is one of many bacterial strains that occur naturally in the gut flora, living in the colon. The inclusion of B. bifidum in a dietary regimen provides the host with a variety of benefits.

Vitamin Synthesis

B. bifidum aids in the synthesis of B-complex vitamins and vitamin K in the intestines. This synthesis protects the body from deficiencies of these vitally important nutrients. The primary function of vitamin K is to regulate the blood clotting process. Vitamin K is also necessary to improve bone health, prevent bone fractures and reduce the risk of bleeding associated with long-term antibiotic use. B-complex vitamins are also essential to good health as they aid in energy production, promote normal growth and development, metabolize protein and carbohydrates, maintain nervous system function and aid in the creation of red blood cells.

Some of the best fermented foods and what bacterium they contain – Yoghurt.

Yoghurt - lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.

Not all yoghurts contain bacteria that are beneficial Many of the yoghurts are not live and so they are not a source of good gut bacteria so do check out the source of your products. Better still make your own out of raw unpasteurized milk

Kefir

Kefir is a bit like yogurt, except that it’s more of a drinkable consistency. Researchers report kefir may reduce irritation in the intestines, preventing toxins and other pathogens from getting into the blood. If you’re choosing to drink dairy kefir, make sure it’s organic and isn’t loaded with refined sugar. There are options for making your own dairy-free water kefir, and many health food companies online sell kefir grains specifically for this purpose. You can also use coconut milk – as long as you can handle coconut that is!!

Kombucha

Made from tea, clean water, sugar, yeast, and bacteria, Kombucha has become popular recently for its probiotic qualities. Its fizzy bite is also popular among those used to drinking soda. Research finds this fermented tea fights off E. coli and Staph bacteria in the digestive tract, possibly protecting against illness and aiding digestion

This is an amazing pro and prebiotic as it has unique bacteria profile.

Probiotics in Kombucha: Bacteria & Yeast

The specific bacteria and yeast strains in the kombucha are what make it act the way it does, and what produce the fizz and flavour of kombucha. Not all kombucha cultures will contain the exact same strains, but these are some that have been recorded in studies:

Acetobacter: is an aerobic (requiring oxygen) bacteria strain that produces acetic acid and gluconic acid. It is always found in kombucha. Acetobacter strains also build the scoby mushroom. Acetobacter xylinoides and acetobacter ketogenum are two strains that you might find in kombucha.

Saccharomyces: includes a number of yeast strains that produce alcohol and are the most common types of yeast found in kombucha. They can be aerobic or anaerobic (requires an oxygen-free environment). They include Saccharomycodes ludwigii, Saccharomycodes apiculatus, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Zygosaccharomyes, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Brettanomyces: is another type of yeast strain, either aerobic or anaerobic, that are commonly found in kombucha and produce alcohol or acetic acid

Lactobacillus: A type of aerobic bacteria that is sometimes, but not always, found in kombucha. It produces lactic acid and slime.

Pediococcus: These anaerobic bacteria produce lactic acid and slime. They are sometimes, but not always, found in kombucha.

Gluconacetobacter kombuchae: is an anaerobic bacteria that is unique to kombucha. It feeds on nitrogen that is found in tea and produces acetic acid and gluconic acid, as well as building the scoby.

Zygosaccharomyces kombuchaensis: is a yeast strain that is unique to kombucha. It produces alcohol and carbonation as well as contributing to the mushroom body.

Sauerkraut

Historically, four species of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been identified as organisms that are present in sauerkraut fermentations:
Leuconostoc mesenteroides,
Lactobacillus brevis, Pediococcus pentosaceus, and Lactobacillus plantarum

Kimchi

This spicy Asian fermented cabbage, similar to sauerkraut, provides you with loads of probiotics. Extensive research indicates it contributes to colon health, lower cholesterol, better thinking, a stronger immune system, healthy skin, and weight loss. Additional research also shows it has anti-oxidative, anti-aging, and immune-supporting properties.

Don’t forget pickles

Much like sauerkraut the Bacteria are highly beneficial – pickles are not only onions and gherkins they are olives and capers as well!

It's easy to forget that olives are a fermented food, but that also means they're rich in Lactobacillus, gut-friendly bacteria.

Think tapenade, and other delicious treats along with some homemade biscuits!! Great for the gut and therefore your health!!

Enough about fermented foods – now onto supplements

The information about the following probiotics is very interesting as I know that Reuteri helps these strains proliferate! First a reminder of what Reuteri is all about

L. reuteri. Regular doses have been shown to have a wide range of beneficial effects. Some well-researched benefits include preventing workplace sickness, relieving constipation therefore promoting regular bowel movements, preventing and and treating female urinary tract infections (UTI) and reducing the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a harmful bacteria that has been linked to peptic ulcers and gastric cancer.

L. reuteri has been shown to assist in repairing leaky gut. Leaky gut is a syndrome that can lead to a range of symptoms, including bloating, gas, cramps, aches and pains, and food sensitivities. It has also been shown to support dental health because it is the only probiotic found in the mouth with the ability to kill off certain kinds of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Healthy levels of L. reuteri are able to keep these bacteria in check and keep your teeth intact.

Reuteri functions as a naturally occurring antibiotic

L. reuteri helps with general gut health through the production of a natural antibiotic substance called Reuterin. Reuterin helps to keep the intestinal microbiota healthy by inhibiting growth of several kinds of harmful bacteria, yeast, and fungi.

Now if you are doing research on probiotics, you might be wondering why a probiotic is producing an antibiotic substance. Aren’t antibiotics responsible for killing off healthy bacteria in the gut? Absolutely! However, the reuterin produced by L. reuteri is an exception because it is produced in very specific amounts. L. reuteri would need to produce 4-5 times the amount of reuterin that is necessary to kill bad bacteria in order to kill the good bacteria in the gut.

This is why it is called a thinking bacterium as it helps to proliferate good bacteria and help to kill off the ones that are negative for us!

It’s a Gram-positive probiotic strain that naturally occupies the gut of birds and mammals. It’s also found in breast milk. Once present in the human body,
L. Reuteri provides many benefits including battling off harmful infections and facilitating the immune system.

Even after writing this information I still only stock Reuteri – as I have said before, being very results driven I will only recommend things that have been proven to me to work and Reuteri comes out on top every time. The more I research the more I find out to keep on doing just that!

Fermented foods are a great way of helping the cause, so find ones you enjoy and maybe rotate them so that you are getting exposure to a variety of beneficial bacteria.

Cheers to great gut health xxx

The Magic of Herbs Barberry

The magic of herbs – Barberry and one of its magical ingredients Berberine

As a herbalist I simply love herbs, I love the fact that there is a herbal remedy out there for every symptom/disease process out there! Big statement but it is so true. So I have decided to start doing a weekly blog about these amazing plants that surround us.

One of my teacher’s favourite sayings was “use what is in your own backyard” and what he meant was that if you are suffering then there will be a solution in your environment. I know that this is true and very often it will be the simple remedies that you can make at home that will be the most effective. Plus, it means that your health is in your hands.

I love that, we can inform ourselves, then we no longer need to fear sickness. We are in the drivers seat. Herbs are a wonderful way to treat “dis-ease” plus you can take some to prevent it happening in the first place.

Today I want to talk to you about a herb called Barberry, but more specifically with one of it’s major ingredients Berberine.

Barberry (specially Barberry Vulgaris) is a herb, which can help with many problems and systems of your body. It is said to help cleanse the liver and the gut. Plus, it is known to be used to prevent cancer and diabetes, so if there is a family history then this herb could be for you.

As a herbalist I use barberry (along with other herbs) for a tonic effect. As it has benefits that are vast: - they include

·         Killing off bacteria

·         Boost immunity

·         Help with high blood pressure

·         Irregular heartbeat

·         Convulsions

·         Reduce inflammation

·         Treats both constipation and diarrhoea

·         Treat or prevent diabetes

·         Improves heart Health

·         Atrial fibrillation

·         Helps with metabolic syndrome

·         Cleanses liver and gallbladder

As you can see this herb packs a very big punch.

Berberine – what is the fuss and what is it?

A while ago as I was doing research to see if there was anything, I could do to help clients who were really struggling. They wanted to come off their medication, but their blood sugars just wouldn’t stay balanced.

And this article came up , which made me take note of some of the most used herbs in my cupboard and look at them a little differently

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5839379/

Basically, this article is telling us the history of metformin – which is a drug used to help with diabetes. And then they show a study that compares metformin with Berberine and the results were very favourable. Plus it shows Berberine to be a huge contender to be created into a drug to treat obesity in the future. Plus the fact it is antiviral and anti-inflammatory.

Why not take the real deal, the actual herbs that contain Berberine plus other chemicals that can support your body in so many ways, not just a drug that is targeting just one thing.
By the way, metformin started of life as a herbal remedy! Like nearly every other medication. The problems arise when that herb is broken down into parts and just the selected ingredients used. Herbs are complete as they are, of course no-one can patient a herb, so not make billions of dollars out of it.

In the study they state that both metformin and Berberine are not well absorbed and in the case of Berberine I believe it is because they have separated out the other ingredients that work in synergy along with the berberine that make these herbs so valuable.

Please do read this study, it will show you how powerful Berberine can be.

Berberine is not only in Barberry it is also found in golden seal, Oregon Graperoot, Goldthread, and Turmeric.

I have a new product that contains Barberry, Oregon grape root and turmeric that act as a tonic and can also help with many ailments mentioned above.

We are calling this Tonic - Mellow Yellow, as Berberine containing herbs as remedies are always yellow!

I will go over the other herbs above in another post at another time

If you would like to learn more about herbs and how you can use them then do get in contact – we will be doing home herbal medicine courses in the near future!

GLUTATHIONE - Mother of all Antioxidants

Antioxidants are as you probably know superheroes for our body — with glutathione being no less than a cross between Superman and Underdog. As the most powerful antioxidant in the body, glutathione works around the clock to fend off the bad guys.

However not many people know about it

Glutathione is going to be a major helper as far as our health is concerned as research is showing us more and more as they begin to connect the dots between depleted stores of this antioxidant and the likelihood of chronic disease. If you haven’t heard of Glutathione yet then watch out – it will be a headliner!

We make this amazing antioxidant in our body but as the body starts to wear out, due to toxins, nutritional deviances and high stress levels, the ability to make it depletes and so we start to break down.

Glutathione is a triple threat to toxins. It neutralizes free radicals, enhances the immune system and detoxifies the liver. The trappings of modern life — everything from refined foods to over-the-counter painkillers to stress — rob the body of this vital antioxidant. Around age 45, our glutathione levels start to slip. Ultimately, those levels can dip as much as 50 percent below optimal as we age.

Some scientists are now concluding that low glutathione levels are in part to blame for the free-radical-induced illnesses so common in middle age and later, such as dementia, cancer and heart disease. Indeed, research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, among people with heart disease, those with the least amount of glutathione in their blood were 30 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those with the most glutathione.

If you have the burden of heavy metal toxicity – like mercury poisoning, then your glutathione levels take a beating. When you decide to do a heavy metal detox, this is using even more of your glutathione and so depletes the levels further

More about Glutathione

Found in every cell in the body, glutathione protects the cell’s engine, called the mitochondria from bacteria and viruses as well as toxins. It’s considered “the mother of all antioxidants because all other antioxidants, including vitamin C and vitamin E, rely on it to give them a second life.

The average antioxidant has a short life span, sacrificing itself whenever it wipes out a free radical. But glutathione carries enough extra zip to not only bring spent antioxidants back from the dead but also to recharge itself.

Most glutathione is made inside the body from three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. In addition, some foods, particularly asparagus, Spinach avocado and squash, are high in a plant version of glutathione that the body converts to replenish its supply.

Under healthy conditions, and in a healthy environment, our bodies would be able to churn out plenty of glutathione to meet our daily needs. But cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, processed foods and certain medications deplete the body’s stash. As does stress. Toxic surroundings may pose an even bigger threat to our body’s glutathione supply. What I mean by toxic surroundings is the chemicals we use to clean and also to make our house smell lovely, air fresheners. Plus, we have another toxic stress and that is EMF – see my other blog on this

To fully understand the importance of glutathione, it helps to know a little more about its nemesis: free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules created by our metabolism. The instability stems from a missing electron. In a mad attempt to find balance, the rogue molecules rip electrons from their neighbours. As a result, those molecules turn into free radicals as well. This damage can eventually snowball and disrupt a cell’s integrity, causing it to behave abnormally.

Our body is always creating free radicals it is part and parcel of life. As it sparks our immune system into life either repairing or destroying. However, it is the amount of free radicals that we are now dealing with that is slowly but surely depleting our body.

Unfortunately, our bodies must contend with an ever-growing onslaught of free radicals in the environment. Free radicals hitchhike into the body on the backs of chemicals in the air, the water supply and the food chain. The cumulative load is called oxidative stress . Corrosion caused by oxidative stress (or oxidation) inside the body is often compared to the slow rusting of metal when it’s exposed to the elements.

Protecting cells from oxidation is where antioxidants, particularly glutathione, come into play. All antioxidants retard oxidative stress, but because glutathione recharges its allies, it plays a particularly important role in helping the body keep up with our accelerated modern-day demands.

Found throughout the body, glutathione is concentrated in the liver. The body’s primary detox organ, the liver is charged with giving nutrients permission to be absorbed and giving toxins heave ho. But expelling a toxin isn’t easy. In phase one, of the liver detoxification process, liver enzymes must convert the toxin into a compound that can be flushed. (phase one of the liver is the rounder up of toxins and phase two mops up)
In phase two, glutathione is used to grab hold of the toxin and escort it out of the body via urine or bile. If there isn’t enough glutathione on hand, the toxins stack up like so many cars in a traffic jam.

Glutathione owes much of its detoxifying prower to cysteine. A sulphur-rich amino acid. Cysteine is abundant in eggs, garlic, chicken, beef, fish and whey protein.

Sulphur is a sticky smelly molecule that acts very much like a flypaper as in it traps toxins “Sulphur is a sticky, smelly molecule that acts like flypaper trapping toxins in the body This is why vegetables high in sulphur, including garlic and onions, have been at the heart of detoxification diets for years. Plus we now have black Himalayan salt that is high in sulphur as well as other minerals. I get many clients to take a form of Sulphur which is commonly known as MSM – the creation of Glutathione is the main reason it is on the menu!

Another plant substance, called cyanohydroxybutene - found in cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage, can help to restock the body’s glutathione supply.
We have been taught that broccoli and other cruciferous veggies are important to the detox protocol, but we didn’t fully understand the significance, Now we know that it’s because they enhance glutathione production

Green tea and resveratrol also contain substances that switch on genes responsible for making glutathione.

If you have already learnt about glutathione and taken a supplement but not had any significant results there is a reason.

It is because we are so much better off if we can give our bodies enough of the ingredients that makes glutathione and then our liver can do it’s job far more effectively. .

So if you know that your liver is struggling then it is time to look at how you can support it in the most natural way possible

Or why not do that even if you are sure you are healthy it would be good to make sure that you are keeping your levels of glutathione up – prevention is so much easier than cure

There is no blood test as yet that can tell you what your levels are – well none that are offered as standard anyway

So, don’t wait until you’re sick to think about glutathione. High stress levels, certain medications, past infections and a poor diet can all nibble away at the body’s glutathione stores.

So develop a strategy

Eat lots of the following –

Asparagus, spinach, grapefruits, strawberries, cauliflower.

Plus the foods that are high in sulphur – as mentioned above - eggs, garlic, chicken, beef, fish and whey protein.

Limit toxin exposure – eat as much organic food as possible plus only buy real, unprocessed foods. Use natural cleaning products and do the EMF detox I talk about in my other blog

Supplement with Selenium – especially in NZ where our levels are very low in the soil.
if you are not on Vitamin C then it is a good idea to make sure you are having enough

Plus include herbs – medicinal and culinary – Milk Thistle, Oregon grape root, turmeric, cayenne pepper they all help enhance glutathione production.

Try our Glutathione boost herbal/homeopathic – it really can help.

Other supplements you can try – although they are expensive if you are struggling with your health and well-being these two are very valuable NAC – N-acetyl- cysteine and Alpha Lipoic acid – both can help a severely depleted Glutathione system.
